CSB was established by Clive S. Barker in October 1989, originally providing specialist export packing and shipping services to engineering industries – In 1991, the opening of our 35,000sqft Charlton depot was used as an opportunity to set ourselves apart from potential competitors by installing twin 15 tonne DEMAG gantry cranes, providing an impressive undercover lifting capacity of 30 tonnes.
Though the early years we focussed on developing strong relationships with leading engineering companies, steadily gaining reputation. However, the world was already changing and although astute management carried CSB through the recession in 1992, the export packing industry continued to suffer due to the steady decline in UK exports and the rise of containerisation.
Recognising that the business could not survive on export packing alone, CSB began to focus on developing other services. Transit storage and consolidation had always been part of export services, but we realised that engineering companies supplying to London construction projects were in need of solutions to help control Just-In-Time supply to site – particularly local storage solutions with specialist handling facilities.
By 1997 CSB was well on the way to making a successful transition, and while maintaining a consistent level of export packing and shipping, the revenue from construction logistics services was growing fast, as was the list of construction clients.
In answer to the ever evolving needs of the industry, innovative new services continued to be developed, such as FAIRCLAD® – Using export packing expertise the Fire And Impact Resistant Cladding system was designed to protect plant room equipment from ongoing construction works.
CSB recognises that our reputation is reliant on innovation and a process of continuous improvement, to enhance the value throughout all of our services. We believe that future success lies in partnering with like-minded companies. By working in partnership at all levels of a supply chain we can extend the scope of project logistics, and ultimately achieve the best possible supply coordination.
